Italian Casino Guide

Home to more than 62 million individuals as of 2017, Italy is one of the countries of South-central Europe that is known for its rugged mountains, splendid landscapes, and remarkable history.

The country has a rich history of gambling that dates back to the days of the Roman Empire. Reportedly, the first public gambling establishment opened in Venice in the year 1638. It is also believed that the popular casino games, Bingo and Baccarat, were invented in Italy towards the end of the 15th century.

So, how has the gambling industry in the country evolved over the years? Let’s find out.

Land-Based Casinos in Italy

Italy has always been a forerunner in the gambling industry, so much that the word ‘casino’ is believed to be Italian in origin.

What is even more surprising is the fact that despite the rich history of gambling in the country, only six land-based casinos are currently permitted in the country.

Here is a list of land based casinos in Italy

The first legal casino in Italy was opened in Venice in 1638. It is the oldest casino in the world and is still operating as Casino di Venezia.

Italy regulated the gambling industry in 2006 and set up a body called Autonomous Administration of State Monopolies (AAMS) for issuing licenses. However, this body was soon dissolved to form another agency called Amministrazione Autonoma dei Monopoli di Stato (ADM).

In order to gamble and play at casinos in Italy, you need to be at least 18 years of age and must carry a valid photo ID.

Casino De La Vallee

Casino De La Vallee is considered to be the biggest and notably best casino in Italy. Located in St. Vincent, the casino attracts tourists and locals alike and highly rated on platforms like trip advisor and four square. The casino has been operating legally since 1946 and is the right mix of both traditional and contemporary styles.

The casino hosts several games including American Roulette, Blackjack, Punto Banco, Poker, slot games, and more. The ground floor has gambling rooms, while the first floor consists of a table service bar.

Online Casinos in Italy

Online casinos are popular in Italy, and their popularity can be gauged from the fact that online casinos nearly dethroned retail wagering in 2019

The online gambling in Italy is governed by the article 38 of the Decree on liberation that came into effect on January 1, 2007.

According to an estimate, there are more than 200 online gambling websites in Italy, out of which about 150 are casino websites, while the rest are online bingo websites, online poker websites, and the like.

To further give a boost to the online casino industry of the country, the European Union passed a new law that came into effect in March 2010. The law allowed foreign casino operators to offer their services to local players after obtaining a domestic license.

This has accelerated the growth of online casinos in the country. Here is the list of casinos in Italy (online):

  • 888Casino
  • Mr. Green Casino
  • SNAI Casino
  • Unibet Casino
  • Betway

Poker in Italy

Both the live poker and online poker in Italy are regulated by ADM. There are only two regulated platforms where players can play poker. These include pokerstars.it, and ipoker.it.

That said, the country has produced many famous poker players. Think of Mustapha “lasagnaaammm” Kanit, who has won more than $11 million in live tournaments. Reportedly, he won a $215 Sunday Million tournament on PokerStars in 2016.

Sports Betting, Horse Racing, and Bingo in Italy

Bingo is played in sophisticated halls and is regulated by Ministerial Decree no. 29. The first bingo hall was set up in 2001 in Treviso. As of now, there are about 250 facilities in the country.

Codere, the Spanish gambling operator, runs its Bingo hall in Rome, Italy. Similarly, many resorts have their own bingo halls where you can enter and participate. Thanks to the simplicity of the game, the bingo halls are growing in popularity.

Sports betting is regulated by Ministerial Decree no. 111, on the other hand, horse race betting is regulated by Presidential Decree no. 169. Most sports betting websites in Italy also allow you to bet on horse racing events. Currently, the Italian sports betting market is dominated by big names like Betfair, Eurobet, 22Bet, and more.

However, it is expected that the government will soon reduce the number of online betting licenses issued to the establishments to exercise better control over the betting landscape. It will be interesting to see how things evolve, but for now, the Italian gambling and betting landscape sure looks promising.
